February 24th is National Tortilla Chip Day, and we are getting excited for it!

To celebrate, we thought we would share with you how you can make delicious tortilla chips at home. The only ingredient you will need are tortillas, oil, and salt.

You will need:

  • ¾ to 1 cup of a high smoke point oil, such as corn or canola oil. More or less depending on how many chips you would like to make.
  • Corn tortillas. Each tortilla will make six chips.
  • Kosher salt.

Method:

  • Leave out tortilla chips overnight exposed to air to dry out. Or dry them in the oven on a baking sheet for 5 minutes at 350°F
  • Cut each tortilla into 6 triangle wedges.
  • Pour oil into skillet to a depth of ⅛ to ¼ inch.
  • Heat oil on medium heat and place tortillas in skillet in a single layer with tongs or a slotted spoon. If the oil gets too hot and smokes, pull off of the heat immediately.
  • Fry for approximately 2 minutes or until chips begin to color and are firm.
  • Remove the chips from the oil with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on a plate covered with paper towels.
  • Remove the chips from the oil with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on a plate covered with paper towels.
  • Sprinkle with salt and place a paper towel on top of the chips to get ready for the next batch.

Recipe adapted from simply recipes

Our favorite and tastiest way to make tortilla chips is to fry the tortillas in oil. However if you are looking for a lower calorie option, you can omit the oil and bake the tortillas with salt in the oven for 12 minutes at 350°F, flipping them after six minutes.
